Complexity is a form of classification given to all Workings found in The Crystal Tomes that ranges from Kal to Shari in ascending complexity. Triflings are not permitted in Crystal Tomes and are considered an unofficial classification below Kal. The Complexity system was implemented long ago by the Crystal Guard as a future safety measure, a kind of quick pulse check on how much draw a given Working might have on your Soul if Transfusing or how many Clips it might consume otherwise.
The largest caveat to the Complexity classification system that often catches newbies off guard is the fact that many simpler Workings have a hidden danger in their simplicity. If a Circle has very general instructions regarding what it targets or does it is often easy to give the Circle something to target that changes its Complexity by one or two ratings which can easily mean the death of the Soul of the individual attempting to conduct it. For this reason all Crystal Tome Workings have additional constraint lines in nearly all Kal and Tiron Workings to reduce the odds of this occurring.
Kal
Kal Complexity being the lowest does not mean it is not potentially dangerous. An untrained Soul can Transfuse very little Meyda before overtransfusion symptoms begin. Someone with a fragile enough Soul could quite easily become a Tzedef by attempting to Work a Circle more than once or twice of Complexity Kal. The vast majority of the Workings in all 7 of the Crystal Tomes are Kal Complexity, decreasing in their density with each new volume, but still making up at least a 3rd of the 77 Workings included in each.
Kal is the only Complexity which can be found in nearly every corner of civilization. Popular and well known Kal Complexity Workings include the following:
Tiron
Tiron Complexity is second most complex and also second most common in its representation. Tiron, though it derives its name from an Abbaki word for rookie, is already significantly more dangerous for true novices. A well practice Wizard can Transfuse Tiron Workings without worry or preparation in most cases, but even then should refrain from excessively conducting Work at this Complexity. Tiron Workings are distinguished from Kal primarily by using more Forms, involving more aspects of the world though not necessarily combining them in more complex ways.
Well known Tiron Workings include:
Madrik
Madrik Complexity is the first that could outright turn a novice Soul into a Tzedef, and is likely to do so without some prior guidance. At the very least a new Worker will immediately experience Meyda-hallucinations upon transfusing a Working of this Complexity. There are very few Madrik Workings in the First Tome however their discovery increased exponentially during the Age of Nations as the ability to create more Complex Workings from the ground up began to emerge.
Well known Madrik Workings include:
Atik
There are very few Atik Complexity Workings that were not Inspired, however the first few discoveries were made in the middle of Time of Rest and later formatted and added to the Seventh Tome by Percival Thornfallow. Most fundamental Tiken Workings belong in this classification, and fill nearly half of its total entries among the Crystal Tomes.
Well known Atik Workings include:
Shari
While some have been theorized now Shari Workings have been invented without the direct influence of Inspired Working. The Olam Beyn and some Blood Dragons remain the only entities capable of creating or devising Workings at this Complexity. Even the most powerful Wizard or Sundered Priest must be careful conducting such a Working. The level of Transfusion required varies at such a vast scale that you are only a few calculations away from destroying your Soul. The same individual might be capable of Transfusing one Shari Working multiple times in short succession but incapable of safely Transfusing another. Modern academia surrounding Meyda-work has begun to propose a sixth Complexity called El’kemu to reduce the broad spectrum these Workings cover but it still requires some additional popularity and spread before it can be come official. Especially since a new Complexity class would mean the first edition change to the Crystal Tomes all of which hold at least one Shari Working that would require its Complexity to be changed.
There are truly no “well known” Shari Workings. However many more advanced Workings in the Field of Necromancy can fall under this Complexity level depending on the instruction sets provided.
